Portrait in Oil by U.S. artist John Clifford Cowles (1861-1951) in Terrasse-Vaudreuil, Quebec for sale

Large framed portrait in oil of a woman. Judging by the clothing, painted in 1898. 35" H x 25" W. This painting, along with a smaller landscape painting (also for sale), has been in my family for at least 70 years ( as long as I can remember). I would like it to go to somebody who will appreciate it.
John Clifford Cowles was born in 1861 in Freeport, Illinois and studied in New York City with Albert Bierstadt and others. He specialized in landscape paintings of ranchlands, particularly in Texas and New Mexico.
In the early 1880's he moved to Paris to study with Albert Besnard and Jean-Charles Cazin at the Sorbonne. He was known as an exponent of the modern French school of painting
He returned to the U.S. in the 1890's, where he made a career as a painter and photographer in the American west. Cowles apparently had mining properties in Nevada and Utah and spent winters in Venezuela and Argentina.
In 1932, he published his mystical mystery novel called "The Whispering Buddha". The art on the dust jacket of the book appears to be a reproduction of one of his works which has a style similar to this painting.
Cowles died in Los Angeles in 1951 at the age of 90.
